The Grand House is a fully furnished, student-focused residence designed to foster a sense of community, exclusively for University of Waterloo architecture students or professors. It offers communal living in a comfortable and eco-conscious environment.
Who can live at The Grand House?
Primarily architecture students, exchange students, or co-op students studying at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. Others may be considered based on availability.
Where is The Grand House located?
It is located in Cambridge, Ontario, within walking distance of the university, YMCA gym, and the local ice rink. It also offers beautiful views of the Grand River. Grocery store and Shoppers Drug Mart are within walking distance
Are utilities included in the rent?
Yes, all utilities such as water, heat, electricity, and high-speed internet are included. The kitchen and Den are also equipped with A/C units for the warmer months, however, due to the fact that the house is well-shaded, it does remain comfortable in the summer months.
Is the house fully furnished?
Yes, it is completely furnished with a fully equipped communal kitchen, a 72” flat-screen TV, gas fireplace, BBQ, and more. All rooms are furnished with a twin bed, desk, chair, and closet unit. Students need to bring their own hangers, mattress pad, and bedding. Students can also choose to bring their own cutlery and dishes but please note the kitchen is fully equipped with dishes, pots and pans, toaster oven, coffee maker, and blender.
Is there parking available?
Parking is available but limited. It is allocated based on availability. The bus stop is located nearby , and the school also sponsors a taxi service after dark to help ensure students' safety.
Is the kitchen shared?
Yes, the kitchen is a communal space, fully equipped for cooking and perfect for group meals and potlucks.
Is Grand House a Secure Living Environment?
Yes, the Grand House property is completely fenced in with two entrances that have a coded keypad gate. Students keep the entry doors locked. The property and stairs are well lit with motion-detected lighting. Students feel safe at Grand House knowing the property is gated and someone is almost always home.
With 14 Bedrooms, Is the Grand House a Noisy Environment?
No, the Grand House is for diligent students at the School of Architecture. We have never had any issues with parties or noise complaints. Students take their studies seriously and live and work in a respected environment.
What Chores are Expected and How is the House Maintained?
Students are expected to clean up after themselves and keep the house clean and tidy daily. The students need to organize a weekly garbage schedule to ensure that timely garbage disposal is shared and executed. Every 3rd week we have a cleaning service that cleans all the common areas: kitchen, den, and bathrooms. If any issues arise or repairs are needed, students are asked to alert our maintenance team, and we will resolve any issues immediately.
What is the Process to Live at Grand House?
If you have been accepted as a student at the University of Waterloo's School of Architecture, then you are eligible to apply to live at the Grand House. We open up applications for the Fall season after the YOU DAY tours in May. Summer term applications are open year-round.
